iPhone 17 and the New iPhone Air: What’s New, Prices, and Dates

Apple introduced the iPhone 17 family—headlined by the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air—with brighter ProMotion displays, a redesigned Center Stage selfie system, and Dual Capture for recording with the front and rear cameras at the same time. Pre-orders start Friday, September 12, and in-store availability begins Friday, September 19 in many regions. 

What’s new in the iPhone 17 family

  • Dual Capture in Camera: Record yourself and what you’re seeing—front + rear video simultaneously—built right into the Camera app on iPhone 17 models. Great for reactions, interviews, and vlogging.  You can also capture with dual camera on older devices (see below).

  • Center Stage selfie system: A new front camera (up to 18MP) reframes automatically for solo or group shots and works in photo/video capture. 

  • Displays with ProMotion: Smoother scrolling up to 120Hz and higher outdoor brightness across the lineup. 

  • 48MP rear cameras: iPhone 17 brings 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra-Wide for higher-detail photos and video.

  • iPhone 17 Air design: The thinnest iPhone yet (about 5.6 mm) with titanium construction and Ceramic Shield protection front and back.

  • iPhone 17 — from $799; 6.3" Super Retina XDR with ProMotion; 48MP Fusion Main + 48MP Ultra-Wide; new Center Stage front camera. Five colors; 256GB base storage. 

  • iPhone 17 Air — from $999; ultra-thin titanium design; 6.5" ProMotion display; 48MP Fusion Main; Center Stage front camera. 

  • iPhone 17 Pro — from $1,099; new aluminum unibody with vapor-chamber thermals; triple 48MP system including new Telephoto; up to 2TB on Pro Max.

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max — from $1,199; 6.9" Super Retina XDR with ProMotion; triple 48MP system including new Telephoto; vapor-chamber thermals for sustained performance; up to 2TB storage.

Dual camera content on older iPhones, too

Loving the idea of Dual Capture but not upgrading yet? You can create dual-camera videos (front + back) on many older iPhones using third-party apps like MixCam—ideal for vlogs, interviews, reaction videos, and behind-the-scenes clips. Availability varies by device, but MixCam’s App Store listing highlights simultaneous front/rear recording so you can start now. 

Pre-order and release timing

Pre-orders open September 12 at 5 a.m. PT; retail availability begins September 19 in the U.S. and many other countries, with additional regions following on September 26.
